Weirdbird is mostly searching several hundred miles further west than I am, so I doubt we'd be in direct competition anywhere. I'm also on a slightly longer timescale in that I really don't want to move before late May 2011 at the earliest.

So we can cheer each other one without reservation! And I can totally relate ... particularly to the unhealthy obsession with MLS listings in potential locations ...

Wheeeeee! That is very exciting news, congratulations and good luck! Please keep us posted. We are experiencing similar excitement, though it is much earlier stages - just applying for a fellowship with the hope that I will actually be done in a year!

This is great news! I'm glad, and not at all surprised, at their interest in you! Of course, selfishly, I am dreading your leaving, but I know it's a good thing for you and the fam. ;)

Congratulations for the developments! And may you find the balance between excitement and detachment while it's all going on.

And are you and The Other Goddaughter in direct competition for any of these jobs?

I don't know, I looked it up and it still looks like a terrible idea. Plus, as the only adult in my household, everything is mine and nothing is mine.

For example, tools: it looks like the original guy got rid of a bunch of tools, which is just a ridiculous idea. Getting rid of expensive, useful tools because of some arbitrary limit on the number of things you can own? Sounds like something you do when you are pitching a book and trying to get on Oprah. Might make a good book but not a good life practice.

Hey, thanks, everybody. You rock. :-)

#1 - Yea, Rev G, I'm way too lazy (or busy? or both?) to have taken the time to actually research the 100 Things business. I thought about it, but decided that if I tried, I'd probably never get a blog post written, and then I'd feel more guilty (cf. #2). So thanks for the summary. It does sound interesting. And when I look at, for instance, my wardrobe, I can easily imagine that I might have a tidier and more satisfying life if I only owned 50 pieces of clothing, all in good condition, well-fitting, and with a clear role in my life. Still, between art supplies and hair accessories, I'm not going to pare down to 100 total anytime soon...

#2. I like Baba Yaga's answer. And Yoda's advice. And all the empathy. Thanks.

#3. I think Zag gets plenty of warm fuzzies too... but I will keep trying to be deliberate about having quality time with him. I really love going off on various small outings with him by ourselves, when we get the chance, and we very rarely fight on those occasions. Probably a good indicator that we both need and enjoy those times.

1. Look closely. The 100 Things Challenge (official name) has rules including items only count if they're YOURS and not SHARED (which sets aside many household or kitchen items, for instance). I've begun doing this list and I'm finding it instructive to see just how many things I HAVE (which I'm unaware of) and how many things I NEED. Google it to find the blog for the rules. Worth a read.

2. Blog, sew, knit what you want. Who's watching? But, for myself, I am finding it distressing and curious that my attention span is getting quite short for long-term projects (even something like finishing a novel). But guilt? Nah. It's a freely chosen askesis, a training of desire and intention. "Do or do not. There is no try."

3. Think of the broad metaphor of shepherding. I think my mother was my first experience of being guided for my own good. And often that required a sharp, unfriendly tone, at least at first. Just make sure you're not holding back with the hugs and the "I love you"s and "You're magnificent, young man"s. My hunch is it'll even out with steady attention that responds to him appropriately. My two cents.

1. It's good not to own more than one can organize. Once stuff gets out of control, it weighs down the spirit.

2. Could you get in touch with the woman who gives you these assignments and ask for extra time?

3. I think probably you've already worked this out. If I had to come up with something it would be, more art for everybody.
