Someday someday, little white shoes

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I stopped briefly at Marshall’s on my way home from church yesterday, because I need more dress pants. While in the store, I paused at the kids’ shoes section. There was a pair of canvas Mary Janes with red flowers on white fabric, red piping around the edges, hook-and-loop closure and a nice protective rubber toe. Very cute and practical. (more…)

Rockin’ out with Gon and Gon

We took Zag to his first rock’n'roll concert today – a kids’ show by They Might Be Giants, at a theater ninety minutes away in Portsmouth, NH. It was totally worth the drive. (more…)

Vanity and vice

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

The good news is, I’m actually feeling pretty good about myself right now, physically speaking. I like my hair and my glasses, and I’m buying clothes that fit me, which means people keep asking me if I’ve lost weight. And I take brisk walks with my dog many evenings, which helps me feel moderately in touch with my body.

The bad news is that last night I encountered kind of a perfect storm. Several factors ran together: my enjoyment of my hair, which is at a very put-up-able length; my freedom to shop online after Easter ended my Lenten discipline, and particularly my rediscovery of eBay after a long hiatus; my lingering grief over the breakage of my purple sparkly octopus hair clip, and the utter boringness of every hair accessory available in the local drugstores;  and my feeling that, since I’m more or less going into show business, I need to make sure I have the right clothes and accessories….

… like sensible shoes, nice slacks, a few collar shirts (to be sought out once I’m cleared for ordination by my Standing Committee), and, well, a whole lot of really nice hair accessories.

I resisted the really pricey ones like this and this and this and this and this. But I found some pretty cool ones much more cheaply on eBay, and a couple of reasonably-priced and pretty metal ones elsewhere… and they kind of added up. Not to an alarming sum, but certainly to an embarrassing one.

Maybe I should ask Tilt to install some blocking software on my browser. No more late-night fancy hair-clip shopping for me.  On the other hand, if anyone’s wondering what I’d like for a graduation gift… :-)

Maundy Thursday

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Soundtrack: If you don’t own Kate Campbell’s “The Last Song,” go to iTunes immediately and buy it. It is the best possible Maundy Thursday song.

It’s the end of a surprisingly lovely day. I have a lot of work bearing down on me, but somehow I convinced myself to take the morning off, and Zag and I went over to wander around Watertown. (more…)

More from Zag

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Zag just pulled out his Santa puppet/potholder from the hanging rocket where our stuffed animals live, and made him say, “Ho ho ho! I have nothing to say!”

On the subject of what to do with anger: I had a breakthrough today. It dawned on me that it’s OK if not everybody likes me.

This feels very gender transgressive. Aren’t girls and women supposed to want everyone to like them? Isn’t that how we feel validated and know that we’re OK?

Well, there are people whose validation I don’t want or need. (more…)

Y’all rock.

Truly, you have a dizzying intellect

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

Zag’s mind, imagination, and mouth are all going pretty much constantly these days. He comes out with great remarks or questions, all the time – I try to remember them, but they come too fast. Just now over dinner I started taking notes on some of  his amusing and infuriating chatter. Here are a few selections. (more…)

Gonna do my very best and it ain’t no lie

Soundtrack for this post: “Take A Chance On Me.” Yes, Abba. In the right mood, a little Abba isn’t such a bad thing.

I’m job searching just as hard as I can. I think I sent out four applications today. (more…)

Zag half-woke in the middle of the night last night, weeping and saying repeatedly, “I don’t want the moon! I don’t want the moon!” (more…)
