Thursday evening roundup
I’m glad my readers have been amusing themselves commenting on my last post, since I haven’t had breath to say much for a few days. Thursday evening is the beginning of my weekend – such a relief to arrive at this point. Here are a few miscellaneous thoughts that are drifting through my busy head as I wind down.
1. My hero Baba Yaga has her own blog now, focusing on her work as a Biblical storyteller. Check it out. Oh, and my Tilt’s been posting again lately! The upside of having me away so many evenings…
2. I’m a crappy thrift blogger. I wanted to post artful little arrangements of the things I found, every time I go thrifting, like Kristin does (…. like Kristin used to? Come back, TSP!), because I love reading that kind of thing. But I’m not that artful, or that deliberate, or something. I bring stuff home and throw it in the laundry immediately so it doesn’t sit around the house in its bag for a week. Besides, I mostly buy really boring stuff. Zag and I spent some time in the $1.50/lb section at the Garment District yesterday – he pretended he was a puppy and rolled around in the giant pile of goodies while I dug for treasure. I found a pair of brown cords for Zag, a pink Talbots dressy sweatshirt for me, a brown nubbly silk shirt for Tilt… nice things, good deals, but not very interesting to blog. Ah, well.
3. I don’t know what to be for Halloween. Last year I just Sharpied a jack o’lantern face on a cheap orange t-shirt. What self-respecting grown woman dresses as a pumpkin? I can do better than that. I’ve been toying with the idea (since it first occurred to me about ten minutes ago) of wearing all the things that will be really inappropriate to wear by next Halloween, if the church sees fit to ordain me to the transitional diaconate in June. All the peculiar, sexy, tasteless or rude garments that I won’t be able to get away with, once I’m a woman of the cloth… I used to be kind of a funky dresser, back in college, and I probably still have a few strange odds and ends tucked away. Do I still have those (unused) red fishnet stockings? Maybe I can wear them over the hot pink tights; it is October, after all. I know I still have iridescent blue lipstick… not much call for that in the pulpit. Hmm. This bears further pondernig. Thoughts, anyone, on attire inappropriate for the ordained? Extra points for cleverness.
4. Obligatory cute kid updates: I got Zag a pirate eye patch and a fake hand hook in the costume section of the Garment District. He likes his pirate costume a lot, and says “Arrrr!” (well, “Awwww!”) with great vehemence, but it’s somewhat muffled by the patch, which he likes to wear over his mouth. He also holds the hook by its hook and refers to it as his light – kind of a special pirate flashlight. In other Zag news, I’ve been meaning to report for a while on his interest in Carl Kasell, NPR newsman and scorekeeper on my beloved Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. Zag knows about Carl Kasell from an old NPR mug we own, and maybe from overhearing Wait, Wait. Zag is also very partial to a song about a space voyage to Cow Planet, on Philadelphia Chickens. Sometimes, deliberately or accidentally, he’ll conflate these two, and start singing about how we’re really on our way to Carl Kasell. A couple of mornings ago he told us very gravely that Carl Kasell is way up in the sky. Whoa… I always thought there was something God-like about that guy.

Oh, thank you for the kind words! Things here at TSP Central have been, well, awful, but I hope to start posting again by the end of the year.
I’ll be having a yard sale…next Saturday, I think. Will keep you posted!
